Kayla Bushey: Unemployed Commentators Podcast
A new episode of Unemployed Commentators is out now, and this time we’re joined by athlete Kayla Bushey. We talked with Kayla about the event she competes in—one many of us have seen in the Olympics but probably never understood beyond the surface. Speaking personally, I had no idea how much mental preparation, physical conditioning, and strategic discipline was involved. The event Kayla competes in is triple jump — one of the most technically demanding events in track and field. It combines speed, strength, rhythm, and coordination through three distinct phases: the hop, the step, and the jump. It’s not just about distance; it’s about precision and control. The technique is so specific that even the smallest misstep can throw off an entire attempt. Kayla broke down how she trains for each phase and how crucial it is to stay mentally locked in from start to finish. Hearing it from an elite athlete really gives you a new appreciation for just how intense triple jumping is.

Kayla was incredibly gracious with her time and walked us through the mindset required to train and compete at a high level. Whether you’re a fan of the sport or just love hearing how athletes tick, this episode is a great listen.
